Fieldwork and Student Teaching

Hands-on experience and observation.

Adelphi provides an array of fieldwork and student teaching placements for teaching certification. Students are placed throughout Long Island and New York City, gaining experience in the K-12 classroom within inclusive and diverse art learning settings. Further, students with preferential sites or teachers can even request a particular placement. Sites such as the Nassau County Art Museum, Alice Brown Early Learning CenterAdelphi Literacy Center, and Waldorf School on campus and nearby provide additional opportunities for field observation and service learning in collaboration with professors. These sites are remarkable resources because they model arts-rich Visual Thinking Strategies, Reggio Emilia, interdisciplinary arts, and Waldorf philosophies. Students complete 100 hours of fieldwork and a full semester of mentored student teaching. In addition, Adelphi offers a unique Model Teaching Program and Global Student Teaching.

Adelphi Model Teaching Program

Candidates accepted for the Adelphi Model Initiative are assigned two experienced teacher mentors and a University liaison who meets with them each week for two semesters. During the fall semester, candidates have the opportunity to observe and participate in classroom activities. Their student teaching experience begins during the spring semester.
