Middle School Education

Gain deeper insight to meet the needs of middle school students.

Examining the many dimensions of the young adolescent experience, including gender, sexuality, intellectual, emotional, ethical growth, and political and social development while providing a deeper understanding of the instructional needs of the students within the middle school environment.

Advanced Certificate Program

The Middle School Education Advanced Certificate program extendeds certification for childhood or adolescent educators:

  • Adolescent Educators (grades 7-12) earn an extension to grades 5-6
  • Childhood Educators (grades 1-6) earn an extension to grades 7-9

In addition to base certification in adolescence or childhood education, students must have 30 credits in one content area:

  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Earth Science
  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Physics
  • Foreign Language
  • History/Social Studies
  • General Science 
    (18 credits in two additional science areas beyond initial science specialty)
Students will complete two courses for a total of 6 creditsoffered in a hybrid format (approximately two thirds online instruction and one third on-campus sessions). 

Students can choose to study at the main Garden City campus beginning in Fall 2013, and will complete the course work in two semesters (fall and spring) or in an accelerated format at Adelphi University’s Manhattan Centerearn an extension to your Childhood or Adolescence Education Certification in only 5 weeks.
